Recently, I was presented by one of my colleague his favourite theme for Visual Studio and I must say that I found it so cool that I’m now using it in all of my development tasks. It’s a dark-background light-font-color theme (see comparison here).
However, this new theme is more than just a cool theme, it made me realize something else. Of course, there could be (and actually there are) many other themes based on color variations (you can find some in this excellent article by Scott Hanselman), but a light-font-color-on-a-dark-background theme seems more comfortable to me. Why?
Before answering this question, I want to be very clear: “This is MY OWN opinion. It’s not based on any scientific result”. Having said that, I find that a white background tires my eyes and attracts my looking more than the code I’m working on (which is, I think, more important than the background…I think!).
With this theme, what emerges most is the code so I can focus better on what is really important. I think it’s because the white color reflects light more than a darker color. Anyway, it helps me better concentrate on my code. But don’t believe me, try it yourself!
Of course, I’m not expecting all of you to agree with me and that’s not the purpose of this article. I found something that helped me and improved my life as a software developer and I wanted to share it with you. THAT’S the purpose.
