It is the new Microsoft search engine and it is called “Bing”. A quick look and you can see that Redmond’s giant has made a great step forward in online search. Much better than Live search (previous Microsoft search engine), Microsoft wants Bing to be a “decision” engine. With Bing, you’ll not only find websites that fit your requests but you’ll be able to take decisions on everyday life (at least this what Microsoft wishes) like: Where to have dinner tonight, Which movie to watch this Friday, Where to go on vacation or even What car to buy.
When you do a search, a left panel contains a series of items to help you take the better decision. For example, if you search for “U2”, you’ll be able to buy tickets for concerts as you can see here:

Search about U2
If you search for “Porsche Carrera”, you’ll be able to look for a new one or a used one:

Search about Porsche Carrera
And so on! You can search for flights, hotels, cameras, etc.
However, there are some problems with this engine. First, you get this search “quality” only if you select “English” as a language. If you select French, here is what you get:
When you search for U2:

Search about U2 (French)
And when you search for Porsche Carrera:

Search about Porsche Carrera (French)
Second, I searched for a flight for Toronto using both Bing and the “usual” way (going from site to site and filling up forms and this kind of boring stuff). The best price I found using the “usual” way was around 50$ less than the best price I found using Bing! I think there’s also work to do around here.
However, keep in mind that Bing was released by June 2009 and I’m sure that Microsoft will improve it over the time.
I hope this will help. Thanks!

I was reading something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your perspective on it is diametrically contradicted to what I read to begin with. I am still mulling over the various points of view, but I’m leaning to a great extent toward yours. And no matter, that’s what is so super about modernized democracy and the marketplace of ideas online.
Hi – really great site you have made. I enjoyed reading this posting. I did want to issue a comment to tell you that the design of this site is very aesthetically delightful. I used to be a graphic designer, now I am a copy editor for a marketing firm. I have always enjoyed functioning with information processing systems and am attempting to learn code in my spare time (which there is never enough of lol).
I use both Bing and Google search engine and i dont see much difference in their search results. I use google for searching hard to find academic topics and Bing for general search.
You’re right ! For now, there’s no big difference between those two search engines. But Microsoft is presenting Bing as a “Decision” engine, so let’s see what they will do with it.
