SkyDrive is one of the Windows Live services and can be accessed by navigating to: http://skydrive.live.com
SkyDrive has a lot of cool features, like:
- Password Protection: You can set a password and give privilege to users so you can control who see what at anytime;
- Access your data anywhere you are: With SkyDrive, you’ve the ability to access your files wherever you are, from a computer or from a mobile device;
- Drag and Drop enabled: How to upload your content? Simply drag and drop them to your SkyDrive folder and that’s it!;
- Direct Link: Each SkyDrive folder has a unique URL so you can save the link to your favourites or send it by email to your friends.
Your first folder in SkyDrive
Let’s create our first folder in our SkyDrive space.
First of all, go to http://skydrive.live.com and log in with your account. You’ll be directed to a page like this:

The most important things to note are:
Point 1: Your SkyDrive free and used spaces;
Point 2: The list of your recent folders;
Point 3: The list of your folders;
Point 4: The links to create a new folder and to add content to an existing folder.
Let’s click on the “Create folder” link! You’ll be prompted to enter a name for your new folder and to select with who you want to share it. You can share it with:
- Everyone: So you make it public;
- Just you: So you make it private (select “just me” in the list);
- Your network: So you share it with your MSN contacts (select “My network” in the list);
- A set of well selected people: So only few privileged persons can have access to your files (lucky guys!). Choose the “Select people…” option in the list.
If you choose this last option, you’ll be able to select categories (Point 5) and/or to enter email addresses of people you want to give them access to your folder (Point 6).

For each person/category/network you selected, you’ll be able to provide (Point 7):
- Limited access: Select “Can view files” in the list;
- Full access: Select “Can add, edit details, and delete files” in the list.

By clicking “Next”, you’ll be directed to this window where you’ll be able to add files to your freshly created folder.

Modify you folder’s Properties and Permissions
Let’s assume you’ve created a folder and you want to change its properties and/or users permissions. Start by clicking on its name to display its content (in this case our folder is still empty but this technique work also with folders containing files). Click on the “More” link.

From the displayed list you can (Point 8):
- Edit users permissions;
- Delete the current folder;
- Rename the current folder;
- View/Edit its properties.
Note:
Note that you have also the ability to send the link to your current folder to your friends by clicking “Send a link”. By clicking the “Properties” link, you’ll get here:

You’ll be able to add/edit a description for you folder (Point 9). You can also copy the direct link to your folder from the “Web Address” textbox (Point 10).
By clicking on “Edit permissions”, you’ll get back to fig. 2 so you can edit users permissions to your folder.
A cool Tip!!
Using SkyDrive, you can use store your favourite links to share them with your friends and/or to access them from wherever you are even if your own computer is not with you (Point 11):
- Favourites: This is your private favourite links folder;
- Shared favourites: The favourite links folder you’ll share with your friends.

Skydrive is a great idea and FREE. Microsoft has a long way to go to catch up with Google but they’re trying.
