Twitter: Good vs. Evil

Twitter is what everyone is talking about. It has turned into the new hype. Apparently, it is also causeing alot of problems for some people. First thing I would like to mention, whoever has subscribed to this blog, send a link to this blog to everyone you know whether they know what twitter is, hate it or love it, send it on, because I am tired of hearing people complain about how Twitter makes their life miserable or they refuse to use it. For example, alot of schools are using Twitter in the classroom. Twitter has turned into a great educational tool and is great to use in the classroom, but some people want to ruin it for everyone by complaining and saying things like “I don’t want to use Twitter. I would rather fail the class instead of use Twitter, if I have to use Twitter I am going to cry to my mother about it…” and blah blah blah.

I guess the point that I am trying to make is that Twitter is taking over the internet. I mean everyone is using it, Oprah, Shaq, football teams, Miley Cyrus, Jimmy Wayne, etc. But yet some people still chose to try and ruin it for everyone. If you dont want to use Twitter and you hate it, your not the only person in this world so get over it, if you hate it, don’t use it. That is fine, but do not ruin it for everyone. If it is going to be added to your school and you hate it, instead of complaining to the air about it, either use it, or drop out, do not complain, I can not stress that enough. I hate math but I have to take it in order to get out of college. If I refuse to take it then I fail school. Why should Twitter be any different? Why should you be able to complain about Twitter, which is a requirement and get it ban and still graduate? Why isn’t every class treated equally?

Instead of ranting on about my own personal experience with people complaining about Twitter at my college, but not putting forth an effort to even try it before they put forth their views on it, I am going to close with this. If you at least try it for one week and don’t like it then you can complain about it. When I say complain I don’t mean rant on and on about it for ever, I mean in a conversation you can bring up the fact of how you hate it. It works the same way as when people say, “If you do not vote in the election, you do not have a right to complain about who wins” If you do not ever try twitter then you cannot complain about how stupid it is. Try it.

I would appreciate if the viewers of this blog would leave me comments on this post answering the following question:

Do you think Twitter should be used in schools? Why or why not?

Do you like Twitter for your own personal use?

Please leave comments. I think this will clear up some peoples views, well at least I am hoping it will. Thank you!

Are you unorganized? Do you find yourself struggling to find things on your cluttered desktop? If you can answer yes to either of these questions above then BumpTop is for you.

“BumpTop is a fun, intuitive 3D desktop that keeps you organized and makes you more productive. Like a real desk, but better.” –BumpTop.com

BumpTop lets you place your files into piles which eliminates the use of browsing through folder after folder trying to find one file. BumpTop also gives you a room look where you have four walls and a floor letting you pin sticky notes on the wall or even putting icons onto the wall, it is like using four different desktops on one screen. It also has a Facebook and Twitter feature where you can drag and literally throw pictures directly into your Facebook or Twitter page to upload them. You can send tweets from your desktop also.

Bumptop lets you either fan through you piles, flip through the files in a pile like a deck of cards, or place the files in a grid to make viewing your files faster and easier then ever before. You just do about anything with Bumptop. There are so many more features available with BumpTop, you will just have to try it to figure it out.

Here is a link to a really good video that demonstrates Bumptop:

Web 2.0: Second Generation of Web Development

You have heard about it for quite some time now, but do you really know what it  is? Web 2.0 encapsulates the idea of the proliferation of interconnectivity and interactivity of web-delivered content. It is because of Web 2.0 that I am even able to bring this information forth to you in this blog. It is because of Web 2.0 that you are able to log into your Myspace page or your MyWindowsPC page. If it wasn’t for Web 2.0 there would be no Twitter or no Friendfeed. Facebook would just be a mere idea that people would consider “farfetched”.

The term was first used by Craig Cline and Dale Dougherty and then itbecame notable shortly after the O Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004. The term refers to the ways software developers and end-users utilizew the World Wide Web.

Web 2.0 is a great interactive tool. Now a days its hard to find someone who doesn’t use some sort of account on a Web 2.0 site. Alot of Universities are now even using Web 2.0 in order to reach out and engage with Generation Y and other students.

Of course with Web 2.o their is some criticism. In a podcast interview, Tim Berners-Lee described the term “Web 2.0″ as a “piece of jargon”:

“Nobody really knows what it means…If Web 2.0 for you is blogs and wikis, then that is people to people. But that was what the Web was supposed to be all along.”

It has also been said that it lacks “buisness models”. In other words, some people see it as ruining the web because people use to go onto the internet and use it for school resources to do their homework. Now they go on the internet to do homework and get side tracked by going to Myspace, Facebook, YouTube, etc. In my opinion, if you are going to get mad about Web 2.0 and criticise it then don’t use Web 2.0 tools like blogs to blog about how stupid you think it is. If you don’t like it, don’t use it.

In conclusion, Web 2.0 is a fantastic improvement to the Web. It helps people become more knowledgeable about the world through blogs. I believe that it helps people learn more and makes it easier to find information. If you need to write a report on Dolphins then instead of going to ten different websites trying to find information for your first paragraph you can subscribe to a blog about Dolphins and find hundreds of entries in minutes. Technology is taking over and instead of complaining get involved.
