Microsoft says Vista buyers to get free Windows 7

SEATTLE (AP) — Microsoft Corp. said Thursday that prices for the Windows 7 computer operating system are largely in line with those for Vista, and that people who buy PCs before the new system goes on sale in October will get free upgrades.

To drum up demand among people who aren’t in the market for a new PC, Microsoft also said it is taking limited pre-orders for Windows 7, selling some for as little as $50.

People who buy Windows Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate computers starting Friday can contact their manufacturer for a free upgrade when Windows 7 becomes available on Oct. 22.

As a result, Microsoft said it will defer recognition of an expected $200 million to $300 million in Windows revenue until later quarters.

Free Windows 7 upgrade to be Limited

Last week Microsoft announced its Windows 7 Upgrade pricing plans. It is cheaper than Windows Vista, as Microsoft really wants wider acceptance of Windows 7. Microsoft: Windows 7 on track for holiday sales

SEATTLE (AP) — Microsoft Corp. says the next version of Windows will go on sale in time for the holiday shopping season.

The software maker published an almost-final version of Windows 7 last week, a sign it would be ready before the official January 2010 deadline.

Windows 7 will replace the much-maligned Vista, which launched too late for the 2006 holiday season.

Is Your PC Ready for Windows 7?

Microsoft has released the beta version of its Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, a free utility that tells you if your PC is ready to run Windows 7. It scans your computer, checking internal components, external peripherals, and programs, and alerts you to potential compatibility issues. It also offers upgrade suggestions, such as which drivers to replace, should you make the move to Windows 7.

It’s a good idea to run Upgrade Advisor, which takes only a few minutes, if you plan to install Windows 7 Release Candidate, which is also available as a free download. (The RC expires August 1, 2010.)

Windows 7 Security Enhancements

Windows 7 makes remote connectivity to corporate networks seamless, protects data on thumb drives, and offers fewer user account control prompts to bug users compared to Vista, Microsoft said on Monday.

The software giant began an education blitz about the security features of the newest version of its operating system at the start of the RSA 2009 security conference.

How hard will it be to move to the Windows 7 Release Candidate?

Windows 7 head honcho Steven Sinofsky published a post on the E7 blog last week that outlined some changes beta testers will face when the next public milestone is released. The most surprising news was the official announcement that Microsoft will not support upgrades from earlier builds of Windows 7, including the official beta released in January. In fact, the RC build, which is due to be released before the end of May, will block upgrades unless you go through a fairly cumbersome seven-step process (which is, helpfully, documented in the same E7 blog post).
