  • It was XP. SP 1

  • @Rob:
Glad updating Windows worked for you- and I’m surprised Dial-a-fix didn’t work (was the computer running Vista?)

  • Yes. I did get the problem solved. I ran a windows update from ms and it solved the problem. The suggestion that you give, I had already tried. Thanks

  • @Rob When you say that the Windows desktop does not start, I’m assuming that you’re talking about the Windows Icons, Taskbar etc not showing up, and that only the wallpaper shows up. Also, I’m assuming that by ’start it manually’, you mean that you press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to start the taskmanager, and use that to start ’explorer.exe’. If I’ve got you wrong, please let me know, but if this is indeed the problem, then it’s really quite simple- so simple, in fact, that I’m pretty sure I’ve understood you wrong. Please provide some additional details, or verify weather or not I’ve understood what you meant. I’ll elaborate on the problem once I’m sure I’ve verified what I’ve understood so far.

However, if this is the problem, and you’re just looking for a quick fix, then I suggest you do the following:
    1. Download Avira Rescue System, and burn it to a CD (http://www.free-av.com/en/tools/12/avira_antivir_rescue_system.html)
    2. Boot the PC using the Avira Rescue System CD that you just burnt.
    3. Under ’Configuration’, select to Clean all Malware, and Rename whatever can’t be cleaned. (Note that to switch to English, you will have to click on the Flag on the bottom left side)
    4. After Avira Rescue CD has removed all malware, boot into Windows
—–I know you removed all malware- but I recommend doing this just to be on the safe side—–
    5. In Windows, start the Desktop manually, like you said you were.
    6. If it’s Windows XP, then download and run ’Dial-a-Fix’ from http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix (Click on the green ticks on the bottom left, and then click Go)
    7. Type ’regedit’ in the Run dialog box, and press enter.
    8. In the Registry Editor, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>>SOFTWARE>>Microsoft>>WindowsNT>>CurrentVersion>>WinLogon
and on the right side panel, there should be a String entry named Shell, with the contents Explorer.exe
If it’s missing or different, then add or change it accordingly.
    9. Repeat step 8, except that instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
That’s all I can think of for now- and I’m pretty certain it should work in Windows XP. For Vista also, I’m 99% sure it should work but can’t guarantee it since I don’t have Vista.

It’s 5 in the morning, I have a test at 8, and I haven’t slept yet. Gnite folks!

  • @Rob:

Quite often, a Windows update solves problems because it releases security fixes, etc.
