How to free up drive space in Windows 10

Are your Windows 10 PC slow? maybe your PC is running low on storage, many few ways to free up some drive space in Windows 10 like, Delete files with storage sense, Uninstall apps you don’t use anymore, Move files to another drive, Save new files to another drive and Turn on OneDrive Files On-Demand. Let’s follow steps below.

Delete files with storage sense

If you have storage sense turned on in Storage settings, Windows 10 can automatically free up space by getting rid of files you don’t need, like temporary files and stuff in recycle bin or you can delete them manually.

  • Click Settings (Win key + I) > System > Storage.
  • Do any of the following:
    • Turn on Storage sense to have Windows delete unnecessary files automatically.
    • Select Change how we free up space > Clean now. To delete unnecessary files manually.
    • Select Change how we free up space, then select or deselect the check boxes for options under Temporary Files and Free up space now. To specify which files you want storage sense to delete automatically.

Uninstall apps you don’t use anymore

  • Click Settings (Win key + I) > Apps > Apps & features.
  • Search for a specific app or sort them by size to see which ones are taking up the most space.
  • When you find an app you want to delete, select it from the list, and then select Uninstall.

Move files to another drive

If you have photos, music, or other files that you want to keep but don’t use very often, consider saving them to removable media, like a USB drive. So you’ll still be able to use them when the drive is connected, but they won’t take up space on your PC.

  • Connect the removable media to your Windows 10 PC.
  • Open File Explorer > find the files you want to move.
  • Select the files, go to the Home tab > Move to > Choose location.
  • Select your removable media from the location list > select Move.

Save new files to another drive

  • Click Settings (Win key + I) > System > Storage.
  • Under More storage settings, select Change where new content is saved.
  • For each content type, select a drive from the drop down menu. If the drive you want to use isn’t listed there, make sure it’s connected to your PC.

Turn on OneDrive Files On-Demand

If you’ve updated to the latest version of Windows 10, save space by turning on OneDrive Files On-Demand. You’ll be able to get to your OneDrive files from your PC without having to download them all. Files On-Demand works with all the apps you use today, including Windows desktop apps and apps from the Windows Store. Furthermore, Files On-Demand works with all your personal and work files from OneDrive and SharePoint Online team sites.

  • Right-click the white or blue OneDrive cloud icon > Settings.
  • Click Settings tab > select the Save space and download files as you use them box.
  • Click OK.
