N Tier Systems

May 2nd, 2009 by keith

Over the years, computers and computer systems have evolved greatly. Before, we had mostly desktop applications running from one’s own computer or a server connected to our client computer. Today, we have lots of web-applications that run in an Internet Browser. Such an application may have levels of activity, like HTML, procedural language like VB, C# or PHP, and then some kind of database and language like SQL. So, there are alot of things to learn to be able to understand the code at all these levels. Many professionals end up collaborating, for example, where one person focuses on the front end, like the Browser experience and the other person focuses on the other end where data management is key. Again, there is alot to deal with. My recommendation is that you try to understand a bit about each level. This will make you a better IT professional. For me as a Tech Writer, the same holds true. I might not understand the fine details of SQL or C# but if I have at least a superficial understanding, then I will be able to document the code much better. So, what is the message of this post? Study! It really does make a difference, no matter what your specific position in IT actually is.

Hello to the My Windows PC Community:

First of all, may I congratulate Rich Robinson on doing a great job of creating this cool new social media website where people can discuss important IT concepts, especially Windows concepts. Microsoft Windows XP and Vista are well established in the personal computer market and Windows 7 is slowly making its way through the beta versions. There should be some great Windows discussions. Many Thanks, Rich.

I am a Technical Writer who enjoys not only writing but also some techie things like Windows Operating Systems (XP, Vista, Windows 7), Computer Programming and Computer Graphics. So, when I have the chance, I will try to contribute something meaningful to this blog. I have a semi-commercial Technical Writing blog on the web that you can visit also. It features a cross-section of writing tips along with some motivational posts and technical posts.  I will try to share some meaningful computing tips and ideas both here and on my regular blog.

Best Wishes,

Keith Johnson
